3 Tips To Keep Your Baby Safe From The Sun

As the summer begins and the days get warmer, we naturally want to spend more time outdoors. We want to take our little ones out with us and allow them to enjoy the sun as well. Although we know the sun can be very harmful, there are steps we can take to prevent any over-exposure. The sun’s harmful UV rays can cause sunburn, heat stroke, dehydration and skin cancer. Our little ones are even more sensitive to the sun than we are. Taking precautionary measures can allow for a safe and enjoyable summer season. Read below for our top 3 tips to keep your baby safe from the sun!

Tip # 1: Avoid Direct Exposure

Avoiding direct exposure from the sun is one of the best ways to protect your little one from the harmful UV rays. Examples can be using the sunshade on your baby’s stroller when outside. If you decide to take your little one to the park, keep your baby under a tree or under an umbrella. If you are on a beach or at a pool, make sure you are seated under a parasol.

Tip # 2: Protective Clothing

You can help protect your little one from the sun by choosing appropriate clothing for them to wear. Choose lightweight clothing that cover your baby’s skin. Make sure the clothing you choose is light in color as light colors help reflect the heat and keep the skin cooler. Dark colors are known to attract and absorb heat.

Another very important piece of clothing you need to make sure your baby is wearing, is a hat. Make sure that the hat you choose has a wide brim that covers the ears, the neck and the front of your baby’s face.

Tip # 3: Sunscreen

This is the absolute best way that you can help prevent sunburn and sun damage. Choose a sunscreen with a minimum sun protection factor (SPF) of 15. Look for the words “Broad Spectrum” on the label as this means the sunscreen will protect against both UVB and UVA rays. Make sure to apply sunscreen 15-30 minutes before sun exposure, or follow the directions on the sunscreen label. If your baby is going to be going into the water, make sure to re-apply the sunscreen once they come out.
